A Redwood Grove in a Neighborhood Park
What a surprise to find a redwood grove in a neighborhood park! And it didn't require driving out of the city to find too!
There's a lot of trails in and near Los Angeles - some with more urban views, some with very popular views such as the Hollywood sign and Griffith Observatory, and some that instantly transport you away from the hustle & bustle of the city. This one definitely fits the latter and if you know where the Brea mall is, this is located less than 10 minutes away!
Located in the city of Brea, Carbon Canyon Regional Park may first appear like any other neighborhood park - kids playground, picnic areas, tennis courts, etc. Drive and park towards the far end of the park and you will find yourself on an unpaved path not characteristic of a typical park.
You will see markers for various trails - follow the one stated for the Redwood Grove and it's an easy hike, in total a 1.5 mile loop.
All of a sudden you will see the Redwoods appear, such a great sight to see! I felt instantly transported to Oregon!

So how did this grove come to be? Apparently the seedlings of this grove were planted in 1975, the remainders of a local bank's promotion for new account customers (makes me wonder if any customers successfully planted their redwood seedling in their yard). Though Southern California has a drier environment than Redwoods typically grow in, these have successfully thrived and to the delight of local residents such as myself.
After enjoying the redwood grove, it was an easy decision to explore the other trails as they all connect to each other. One of which led to the Carbon Canyon Dam which was built in 1961 and eventually the land below the dam became this park.
